It was very childish, but everybody was really enjoying
themselves. He
stuck around till around dinnertime, talking about all the guys at Pencey that
he hated their guts, and squeezing this big pimple on his chin. He didn’t even
use his handkerchief.
It was the only
dive he could do, but he thought he was very hot stuff. Anyway, that’s who Jane dated that night. After we started going around together, I asked her how come
she could date a show-off bastard like Al Pike. Jane said he wasn’t a show-off.
It’s not too bad when the
sun’s out, but the sun only comes out when it feels like coming out. Anyway,
while I was putting on another clean shirt, I sort of figured this was my big
chance, in a way. I figured if she was a prostitute and all, I could get in
some practice on her, in case I ever get married or anything. I worry about
that stuff sometimes.
For one thing, the room was too damn hot. At Pencey, you
either froze to death or died of the heat. «Like
hell it is.» I took it off and looked at it. I sort of closed one eye, like
I was taking aim at it. «This is a people shooting hat,» I said. «I shoot people in this hat.»
Had no business going out to Hollywood. That’s exactly what I said,
practically. Boy,
I sat at that goddam bar till around one o’clock or so, getting drunk as a
bastard. I could hardly see straight. The one thing I did, though, I was
careful as hell not to get boisterous or anything. I didn’t want anybody to
notice me or anything or ask how old I was.
«I may be wrong but I believe your nose
is bleeding, dear,» she said, all of a sudden. «That’s
all right. We can smoke till they start screaming at us,» I said. She took
a cigarette off me, and I gave her a light. Then I watched her take off her gloves.
Anyway, I was telling you about that afternoon
Jane and I came close to necking. It was raining like hell and we were out on
her porch, and all of a sudden this booze hound her mother was married to came

didn’t want her to go to sleep while I was in the living room. I knew she
wouldn’t but I said it anyway, just to make sure. I didn’t get a chance to answer it, though. It was all
about this play she was in in school.

Mr. Antolini answered the door when I rang the bell―after the elevator
boy finally let me up, the bastard. He had on his bathrobe and slippers,
and he had a highball in one hand. He was a pretty sophisticated guy, and he
was a pretty heavy drinker. «My God,
he’s grown another twenty inches. Fine to see you.» I
got off at our floor―limping like a bastard―and started walking
